The seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Straight out of Hollywood kind of story, it felt like a movie. I loved how Evelyn Hugo’s character was framed, by visualizing her character, you become aware of what she’s capable of and how powerful she is. However, beneath the power, there are layers of vulnerability and she is only human at the end of the day. The book cuts across themes such as Managing positions of Power, building a Career, dealing with abuse and violence, and managing relationships (family and romantic relationships).

“Don had pushed me down the stairs nine days before. Even as I say it all these years later, I feel the need to defend him” why do victims always feel a need to protect their abusers?

“If you’ve never been smacked across the face, let me tell you something, it is humiliating. Mostly because your eyes start to tear up, whether you mean to be crying or not. The shock of it and the sheer force of it stimulate your tear ducts.” God abeg

It is very important to nurture relationships. Life can be overbearing at times, and we are always very committed to our dreams and ambitions, but quality time should be allotted to our loved ones as well because time lost is not easily recovered if it is recovered at all.

“And when they put her in the ground next to her father, I broke like I have never broken before. The devastating luxury of panic overtook me. And it has never left.” This made me cry. Grief stings

“But sometimes I get so mad at us for all the years we lost. For all the time we wasted” Time is important in nurturing relationships, we don’t have all the time in the world!

I enjoyed reading the book. The “human-ness” of Evelyn Hugo, with all her flaws and her imperfection, was the highlight for me.

5/5*
